Student Phone Charging Station
This is something I tried out this year that seemed to resonate with some students. I decided to provide a "charging station" for students to park their cellphones and let them charge during class time.
Student Phone Charging Station |
As soon as students walk into the classroom, before class actually starts, I allow them to place their phone in this calculator wall storage. I also provide a power strip that includes USB ports and regular outlets. Some students like the USB ports. Some like to use their own charger in the outlets.
Note: Originally I had the outlet/surge protector attached to the wall, but after several months the sticky backing just stopped holding it up. Now I just leave the outlets on the floor. Still works just fine.
PROS:
- Very easy to manage, once you set it up. (Takes very little attention during class time.)
- Means a big deal to some students.
- Keeps students from sneaking to the REGULAR wall outlets to plug in their phone. They don't even ASK me to plug in their phones anymore. Also: Students no-longer try to use their Chromebooks to charge their phones.
- Is one more incentive for students to have their Cellphone AWAY from them where they can not be tempted to try to use it during class.
CONS:
- Does cost some money to set up (was about $30 for me)
- Stolen Phone possibility: Teacher might be partially to blame for it
