Student Phone Charging Station

This is something I tried out this year that seemed to resonate with some students. I decided to provide a "charging station" for students to park their cellphones and let them charge during class time.

Student Phone Charging Station

As soon as students walk into the classroom, before class actually starts, I allow them to place their phone in this calculator wall storage. I also provide a power strip that includes USB ports and regular outlets. Some students like the USB ports. Some like to use their own charger in the outlets.

Note: Originally I had the outlet/surge protector attached to the wall, but after several months the sticky backing just stopped holding it up. Now I just leave the outlets on the floor. Still works just fine.

PROS:
  1. Very easy to manage, once you set it up. (Takes very little attention during class time.)
  2. Means a big deal to some students.
  3. Keeps students from sneaking to the REGULAR wall outlets to plug in their phone. They don't even ASK me to plug in their phones anymore. Also: Students no-longer try to use their Chromebooks to charge their phones.
  4. Is one more incentive for students to have their Cellphone AWAY from them where they can not be tempted to try to use it during class.
CONS:
  1. Does cost some money to set up (was about $30 for me)
  2. Stolen Phone possibility: Teacher might be partially to blame for it
